Anthuriums: A heartfelt wedding floral renaissance

Hot on the heels of my last post, let’s chat about the the chic and contemporary anthurium.  The past few years have seen a stratospheric revival of what’s become the season’s most fashionable flower.  Popular in the 90’s it fell out of favour when the English country garden style burst on the scene at the beginning of the noughties.  It’s tropical vibe didn’t seem to fit with the foliage heavy, garden style designs that reigned for almost 20 years.

But they’re very much back and a firm favourite for the best floral designers right now.  Their edgy credentials were indeed confirmed at the Loewe Spring Summer 2023 show.   J.W. Anderson’s whole collection was a celebration of the waxy bloom.  A  feast for the eyes, models paraded in anthurium adorned tops, shoes and bags.

I myself have massive heart eyes for this sexy little bloom. Any keen followers of my wedding flower work will have seen it feature in almost all of my most recent events. I simply can’t get enough of them.  See below how arrangements featuring typical English varieties of the blousy peony and sweet pom pom dahlias are given a cool, contemporary twist with the addition of the structural anthurium.

Just one stem can really pack a punch. So even though they’re not the cheapest option, a single bloom has the floral power to completely elevate a design to a whole new level of gorgeous.  I think it’s the heady combination of their slender, elongated height, the beautiful heart shaped silhouette and the stunning and extensive colour palette. From dreamy pastels to bold primaries there’s a shade for every wedding floral brief.

Available all year round and one of the most wilt resistant wedding flowers they’re a stand out winner.  Not just for style conscious brides and grooms but for sweaty, stressed out florists dealing with our ever steamier summers!

For all our event clients, we produce inspiring mood boards to help you envisage the flowers of your dreams.  So if you’re interested in how we can incorporate this swoon inducing bloom in to your special day do get in touch.  Or just any of your favourite flowers quite frankly, we love them all. xx
