May Wedding Flowers – The Magic of Peonies

How many times have my brides-to-be requested peonies in their wedding florals….too many to count.  But it’s only May brides that receive a big thumbs up.  Yes, it’s that happy time in the wedding flower calendar once again. This much loved bloom, in all it’s ruffled glory, is exploding on to the scene.

Their exquisite beauty and timeless elegance, is long cherished.  It’s known as s a symbol of love, romance, and prosperity.  Given is worldwide adoration, I thought it would be fun to delve a bit deeper in to the background of this wedding flower fave.

The Symbolism of Peonies

Peonies have a rich history steeped in symbolism.   Revered for centuries in Chinese culture as the “King of Flowers,” peonies symbolize prosperity, honor, and a happy marriage. In Western traditions, peonies are associated with romance, compassion, and enduring love. For the spiritual May bride, it’s the perfect wedding flower.

Timeless Elegance and Versatility

One of the most alluring qualities of peonies is their timeless elegance and versatility. Available in a spectrum of hues, from soft blush and ivory to vibrant coral and magenta, peonies offer endless possibilities. Stunning bridal bouquets, eye catching table centres, next level archways and more.  Whether you’re planning a romantic garden wedding, an intimate elopement, or a lavish ballroom affair, peonies add the wow factor to any setting.

The Beauty of Blooms

Peonies are beloved for their sumptuous blooms, characterized by layers of delicate petals that unfurl to reveal a captivating display of color and texture. Their lush, voluminous heads exude an air of opulence and romance.  Whether used alone or paired with complementary blooms, peonies have a magical quality.  They are super long lasting as well, with chameleon like qualities.  Some varieties, such as Coral Charm, begin their life as a juicy tropical coral shade and gradually fading to the softest lemon yellow.

Seasonal Availability

While peonies are traditionally associated with late spring and early summer, their availability can vary depending on the region and climate. In many parts of the world, peonies are at their peak from late April to early June.  This makes them an ideal choice for spring and early summer weddings.

In Conclusion

Peonies, with their timeless elegance, romantic symbolism, and exquisite beauty, have earned their place as beloved wedding flowers cherished by brides and florists alike.

But for every swooning bride, believe me, there’s a stressed out florist gambling on when to get them in.   Those tight little balls need a few days (as well as a little sun, warm water and even a massage!) to reveal perfectly open petals.  But it’s all part of our service and they’re definitely worth it.

Our love affair with peonies may be fleeting, but there are many many gorgeous flowers available during each and every season – all of which we can advise on.
